Morán Municipality covers approximately 2,230 km² in the south of Lara state, stretching from the Tocuyo river valley (620 m above sea level) up to the Andean páramos of Dinira National Park (over 3,000 m above sea level). It borders the Iribarren Municipality (Barquisimeto) and Jiménez Municipality (Quíbor) to the north, the Andrés Eloy Blanco Municipality (Sanare) and Trujillo state to the east, Portuguesa state to the south, and Trujillo state to the west.

Getting there by public transportation

From the Barquisimeto Passenger Terminal, intercity buses and shared taxis (carritos por puesto) depart regularly for El Tocuyo. Frequency is high (several departures per day) and the trip takes around 1 hour 30 minutes including stops. It is the most economical option.

From Caracas, Valencia, Maracay or Maracaibo, the best plan is to travel first to Barquisimeto on an overnight bus, then take local transportation to El Tocuyo from there.

Getting there by plane

The closest airport is Aeropuerto Internacional Jacinto Lara (BRM), in Barquisimeto, 70 km from El Tocuyo. It receives domestic flights from Caracas (CCS), Maracaibo (MAR), Porlamar (PMV) and other cities, and has operated occasional international flights in the past. From the airport you can take a taxi or public transportation to the bus terminal and then on to El Tocuyo.

Getting there by private vehicle

The most comfortable and flexible option. Trunk Road 7 from Barquisimeto is well-signed and maintained; the turnoff to El Tocuyo is clearly marked after Quíbor. If you are coming from the south (Trujillo, Mérida, Portuguesa), the mountain roads are scenic but require careful driving, especially in the rainy season.

Getting to the Andean parishes

Once in El Tocuyo, the Andean parishes of Morán Municipality are 1-2 hours further south along the Tocuyo–Humocaros–Guárico road.

Best time to visit El Tocuyo

The dry season, between December and April, offers clear skies and roads in better condition. To experience the Tamunangue, plan your trip around June 13 (Saint Anthony of Padua). During the rainy season (May-November, peaking in September-October), the mountain roads toward the Humocaros and Guárico can have minor landslides.
