Capital of Morán Municipality: El Tocuyo
The capital of Morán Municipality is El Tocuyo, one of the oldest cities in Venezuela. Founded on December 7, 1545 by the Spanish conquistador Juan de Carvajal, it served from 1546 to 1548 as the capital of the Province of Venezuela, and from its streets departed the expeditions that founded Barquisimeto (1552), Trujillo (1557), Carora (1569), Borburata (1549), Valencia (1555) and, with logistical support, Caracas (1567). That is why it is known as the "Mother City of Venezuela".
El Tocuyo concentrates the municipal administration, the seat of the mayor's office and the council, the main churches, plazas, museums, businesses, traditional bakeries, inns, schools and hospitals of the municipality. It is also the cultural heart: here the Tamunangue is danced every June 13 and the patron saint festivities of the Inmaculada Concepción are celebrated every December 8.
