Flora and fauna of Morán Municipality: Lara biodiversity
Few municipalities in Venezuela combine so many ecological floors as the Morán Municipality: in less than 50 km in a straight line you go from the warm and semi-dry valley of El Tocuyo (620 m above sea level) to the Andean paramo of Dinira National Park (more than 3,000 m above sea level). That variation produces an enormous biodiversity in flora and fauna that deserves to be known.
Ecological floors of the municipality
- Tropical dry forest — Tocuyo valley and lowlands (500-900 m above sea level).
- Premontane forest — Transition to the Humocaros (900-1,500 m above sea level).
- Andean cloud forest — Humocaros and Guárico (1,500-2,500 m above sea level).
- Subparamo and paramo — Dinira National Park (2,500-3,500 m above sea level).
Valley flora
The tropical dry forest of the Tocuyo valley is adapted to seasonal drought. Characteristic species:
- Cují (Prosopis juliflora) — Emblematic thorny tree, producer of edible pods.
- Cardón and prickly pear (cacti) — Adapted to the driest areas.
- Yagrumo (Cecropia peltata) — Large silvery leaves, indicator of altered areas.
- Guamo (Inga) — Leguminous shade tree for coffee plantations.
- Bucare (Erythrina poeppigiana) — Tree with red flowers used as shade.
- Samán (Samanea saman) — Iconic tree with a broad crown.
- Indio desnudo (Bursera simaruba) — Characteristic reddish bark.
- Cedar and mahogany — In more preserved areas.
Humocaro flora (cloud forest)
As you climb, the much more humid Andean cloud forest appears:
- Tree ferns (Cyatheaceae) — Prehistoric relics.
- Bromeliads and orchids — Numerous epiphytic species.
- Mussaendas and wild begonias.
- Andean alder (Alnus acuminata) — Pioneer tree of high basins.
- Creole pine (Podocarpus oleifolius) — Native conifer.
- Quinos and cinchonas — Historical for quinine.
- Arabica coffee — Grown under the shade of native trees.
Paramo flora (Dinira)
In the highest areas of Dinira National Park (shared with Trujillo and Portuguesa):
- Frailejones (Espeletia) — Emblematic plants of the Andean paramo.
- Pajonales of cold-resistant grasses.
- Chusquea — Andean bamboo.
- Quitasueño and miconia.
- Mosses and lichens abundant.
Valley fauna
Mammals
- Armadillo (Dasypus) — Common armadillo.
- Paca, ocelot, squirrel.
- Crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous).
- Wild rabbits and cavies.
Birds
- Doves, pigeons, mockingbirds.
- Cardinals, blue jays, gonzalitos.
- Woodpeckers, anis.
- Birds of prey: deer-eater hawk, falcon, tuquí.
Reptiles
- Iguanas, white-tailed iguanas, small lizards.
- Tragavenado and other non-venomous snakes.
- Occasional mapanares and rattlesnakes (caution).
Humocaro and mountain fauna
Mammals
- White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).
- Puma (Puma concolor) — Rare but documented sightings.
- Andean ocelot.
- Coati (Nasua nasua).
- Howler monkey (in adjacent low areas).
Highland birds
- Golden-headed quetzal (Pharomachrus auriceps) — Emblematic species.
- Trogons, Andean toucans.

- Paramo rabbit.
- Andean lizards.
- Endemic amphibians (several species of unique frogs).
Rivers and aquatic life
The main watercourses of the municipality are the Tocuyo River and its tributaries (Anzoátegui, Curarigua, Boconó). In them live:
- Catfish and guabinas.
- River sardines.
- Freshwater crabs.
- Aquatic birds: herons, kingfishers, water hens.
Conservation
The municipality has important protected areas:
- Dinira National Park (shared with Trujillo and Portuguesa).
- Local reserves around the headwaters of the Tocuyo River.
- Riparian forests of the valley.
Even so, there are pressures from deforestation, selective logging and the advance of the agricultural frontier. Environmental education and responsible ecotourism are key tools to conserve this heritage.
Why Morán biodiversity matters
The flora and fauna of Morán Municipality are natural heritage of Venezuela. Knowing and protecting it is a shared responsibility of inhabitants, visitors and authorities. When you come, remember: do not take wild plants or animals, do not light fires in forests and respect protected areas.
