How to get to El Tocuyo from Barquisimeto

El Tocuyo is one of the essential tourist destinations of Lara state and most travelers arrive from Barquisimeto, the state capital and the closest air and road hub.

Distance and time

  • Distance: approximately 70 km southeast of Barquisimeto.
  • Time by car: between 1 hour and 1 hour 15 minutes, depending on traffic.
  • Type of road: national paved road in acceptable condition.

Main route (via Quíbor)

The classic route is Barquisimeto → Quíbor → El Tocuyo:

  1. Leave Barquisimeto via Av. Lara or the southern exit toward Cabudare.
  2. Take the Lara-Zulia highway toward Quíbor.
  3. Cross Quíbor (it is worth stopping at its Plaza Bolívar and buying handicrafts).
  4. Continue another 30 km along the valley road until reaching El Tocuyo.

By public transport

There is bus and shared-taxi service from the Barquisimeto Passenger Terminal. The shared taxis are the fastest option and usually depart when full. The cost varies according to the season.

Practical tips

  • Leave early in the morning to make the most of the day.
  • Carry cash in bolivars: not all businesses accept card terminals or digital payments.
  • If you are going to the Humocaros (Humocaro Alto, Humocaro Bajo), reserve at least a full day: they are mountainous areas and beautiful for walking, but the roads are slower.
  • During the rainy season (May–November) check the road conditions and drive carefully.
  • The climate is usually warm in El Tocuyo and cool in the Humocaros: bring clothes for both situations.

What to see when you arrive

When you arrive at the El Tocuyo town center, do not miss:

  • The Plaza Bolívar and the Inmaculada Concepción Church.
  • The Colonial Museum / Eligio Anzola Anzola Cultural House.
  • The traditional bakeries to take Tocuyo bread back home.

Have a great trip to the Mother City!
